An El Mirage, Arizona toddler is in critical condition after falling into his family's pool Friday night. El Mirage police and firefighters were called to the 3-year-old's home in the 12700 block of Santa Fe Lane at about 6:50 p.m. Friday after his mother found him lying near the bottom of the deep end in the backyard pool. Police at the scene soon determined the boy's 32-year-old mother had been inside tending to her 7-month-old daughter while her toddler played alone on the backyard patio, said Bill Louis, assistant police chief in El Mirage. She had been calling out to the 3-year-old every few minutes and was startled when she didn't get a response. After searching the yard, the boy's mother found him in the pool and pulled him out, Louis said. Police estimate the boy had been under water for several minutes. When paramedics arrived, they performed CPR on the toddler. He was not breathing when they arrived, Louis said. The boy was then airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital where he remained on a ventilator early Saturday.Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
